How to Use a Presta Valve With a Pump

To inflate a tire with a Presta valve, loosen the small tip nut, attach a compatible pump head, pump to the appropriate pressure, then remove the head and retighten the nut.

Before you start

Presta valves have a narrow stem and a small nut at the tip. You need a pump head made for Presta valves, a dual-compatible head set to its Presta opening, or a Presta adapter if your pump accepts only Schrader valves.

Check the tire sidewall and the tire and rim manufacturers’ guidance for an appropriate pressure. Do not exceed the lowest maximum pressure listed for your setup.

Inflate a Presta valve step by step

  1. Remove the valve cap, if there is one.
  2. Loosen the small tip nut. Turn it counterclockwise until it stops. Do not remove it completely.
  3. Check that the valve opens. Press the tip briefly. A short burst of air is normal; it can also help free a valve that is sticking.
  4. Fit the pump head. Use the Presta opening on a dual-head pump, or set a reversible head to Presta according to its markings. Push the head straight onto the valve. If it has a locking lever, engage it as directed by the pump manufacturer. Avoid forcing or overtightening a threaded connection.
  5. Pump to the target pressure. Read the gauge if your pump has one. If it does not, use a separate gauge or follow the tire maker’s guidance rather than guessing by feel.
  6. Release and remove the pump head. Disengage the lever first if needed, then pull the head straight off. If it is threaded, unscrew it gently.
  7. Tighten the tip nut finger-tight by turning it clockwise, then replace the cap if you use one. The tip nut does not need to be wrench-tight.

Using a Schrader-only pump

A Presta adapter converts the valve connection so it can work with a Schrader pump head. After loosening the Presta tip nut, screw the adapter onto the valve tip by hand. Attach the pump head to the adapter and inflate as usual. When finished, remove the pump head and adapter, then tighten the Presta tip nut.

Keep the adapter with your pump or bike so you have it when needed. Some adapters may require a small gasket; follow the adapter’s instructions if air escapes at the connection.

If the pump will not work

  • The pump head will not fit: Check that a dual-head pump is set to its Presta side. If the pump is Schrader-only, use a Presta adapter.
  • Air escapes around the head: Remove it and check that the tip nut is loosened. Reattach the head straight and make sure its lock or seal is engaged. Check the pump instructions before adjusting any internal parts.
  • Air escapes from the valve tip: Make sure the tip nut is loosened while pumping and tightened afterward. If the valve still leaks when closed, the valve may be damaged or its core may need service. Use only a compatible replacement core, if the valve has a removable core, or ask a bike shop for help.
  • The tire does not gain pressure: Check that the pump head is fully seated, the pump is configured for Presta, and the tire is seated on the rim. Stop if you hear air escaping rapidly or see the tire shifting; inspect the setup before pumping further.
  • The pump head is difficult to remove: Release its lock before pulling. For a threaded head, turn it gently rather than twisting the valve stem.

If the valve is bent, cracked, or persistently leaking, have it inspected. Replace a damaged tube or valve rather than forcing the pump connection.

FAQ

Do I need to unscrew the whole Presta valve tip?

No. Loosen the small nut until it stops, but do not remove it completely. Tighten it finger-tight after inflating.

Can I use a regular bike pump on a Presta valve?

Yes, if the pump head supports Presta valves. For a Schrader-only pump, use a Presta adapter.

Why does air come out when I press the Presta valve?

A brief burst is normal and confirms that the valve is open. If air continues escaping after you finish and tighten the tip nut, check for a damaged or faulty valve.

How tight should the Presta valve nut be?

Tighten it finger-tight. Using a tool or excessive force can damage the small nut.
